  Chapter 1

It took Blaze a surprisingly short amount of time to sort out the bloodbath that Enzo had made of that small corner of the college grounds. As soon as he was sure the area was safe, he sent the rest of my mates away and called in the security team, who checked again for the assassin, poking guns into hedges and examining the corpses.

I stood there, wrapped in a blanket, watched over by another security of
ficer, while Blaze reported to Professor Saxon and more security blanketed the place. He recounted an edited version of events that began with my wandering from the ball in search of air and encountering all six assassins, who then turned on one another for the money. He blamed all five of the dead bodies on Enzo, who won the battle between assassins only to run when Blaze chanced upon the fray during his patrol route.

It wasn’t hard to pretend shock and horror when surrounded by butchered corpses with the memory of Enzo threatening my mates fresh in my mind. Professor Saxon looked at me with such sympathy that even I wanted to believe that she really was on my side, but I’d seen her in my vision and knew that she was very likely to have organised the hit on my head.

“We’re working to take down the site where the hit was posted,” Blaze informed the Professor sombrely. “It’s likely to take weeks, so I must suggest that the student be kept under close watch until then.” He paused, stroking at the edge of the medical tape the healer had applied to the wound on his neck.

They’d tried to put a similar bit of tape over the wound on my abdomen, but the cut had disappeared as if it had never even been there. The skin was pink, but otherwise there was no evidence of the blade that Enzo had pressed against me.

“Do you know what motivated the attack?” Professor Saxon’s eyes stopped surveying the scene for a brief second to glance at me before turning back to Blaze.

“Could have been anything,” he admitted with a shrug. “But she’s the first succubae in almost a hundred years. She also had that incident with the Abrosiax girl in the practical exam.”

I hated how professional and detached he sounded when he spoke about me in front of others, even though I understood that it was necessary. I, on the other hand, had no idea how to hide how I felt about him. So far, I’d gotten lucky by deliberately not looking at him, but that wouldn’t work forever.

“Lilith?” Professor Saxon addressed me with the gentleness of someone approaching a frightened deer. “Do you need to see a healer?”

I shook my head. “No, Professor.” I tugged the blanket closer to my chest, speaking to the floor rather than daring to look at either of them. “But I’d like to go back to my dorm, if I could.”

Saxon turned back to Blaze. “Send someone to escort her there safely. I’ll speak to Maddox… Lilith did you have anything set up for your work placement?”

I shook my head. “No, Professor. I was going to look at the signup sheet on Monday.”

“Maddox was a three-time national duelling champion a couple of centuries ago...” Professor Saxon muttered, her eyes drifting to the horizon as she considered the situation. “The library sent an official complaint against him across my desk last week – he has over two hundred overdue books squirrelled away in his office. Lilith, would you mind helping me kill two birds with one stone? Maddox will keep an eye on you, and you’ll be his assistant for two months.”

“A good suggestion.” Blaze ran a hand through his hair. “I’ll see to it that she has a security escort moving around the grounds, just until we take down the site.”

Professor Saxon was silent, still waiting for my answer.

“Okay.” I dared a glance up at her. “I’ll help Professor Maddox.”

“It’s settled.” Saxon smiled. “Don’t worry Lilith, this sort of thing happens every decade or so at Vice, there are a lot of children of very influential demons here. Nothing will happen to you.”

I nodded, trying to keep my eyes off the officer photographing the gaping wounds across an assassin’s chest.

“Come on, Carazor.” Blaze turned away from the headmistress. “I’ll escort you back to the Carnal Tower.” He bowed his head to Professor Saxon. “Headmistress.”

“Officer Inferna.” She tilted her head to return the gesture and turned to talk to a different officer.

Blaze took my arm in one hand and led me away from the carnage towards the darkness. When we were far enough away not to be overheard, he leaned towards me, his stiff posture relaxed but still alert.

“Are you okay, Sweetness?” His tone had softened, and he scanned me again from head to toe.

“Just tired.” It was the understatement of the century, but there were bigger things going on than my need for a nap. “Mating bonds take a lot out of me, but I’ve had more power than usual recently.”

“Having four men drooling after you will do that to a succubus,” Blaze teased. “I imagine when Bane’s resolve finally snaps and Daron finishes wooing you like a damned gentleman, you’ll not have to worry about being low on power very often.”

My breath hitched, remembering Enzo’s erection pressing into my ass and I shuddered. “He wanted me too,” I admitted, not sure how I felt about the knowledge. “I could feel it.”

Blaze didn’t have to ask me who I meant, and his hand tightened slightly before releasing me. “What did he say to you before we got there?” he asked, tempering his tone. “Did he give you any clues to his identity? Anything at all?”

“He had a London accent.” I would never forget that voice. “Not cockney, but it had that kind of edge to it. And he told me his name was Enzo.”

  “We’ll find him.”

“And then what? Once we find him, what am I supposed to do with a mate that can’t decide if he wants to kill me or not?”

“Things will work out,” Blaze promised, holding my gaze. “The Strange God would not have made him for you if there wasn’t a reason.”

We reached the door to the tower and he bent down to kiss me sweetly. “He had umbrakinesis – darkness manipulation – so it might be best if you try to avoid leaving the Carnal Tower after dark for a little while.”

I sighed in reluctance, but I knew he was right. “I agree… I just… I hate that I can feel him, and I don’t even know him.” I rubbed a hand over my breastbone, where I could feel all five mating bonds tethered.

“You should have refused,” Blaze muttered, green eyes darkening with anger. “And how can you tell his bond from any of the others?”

I smiled, running a psychic hand along all four of the other bonds. “They’re all different,” I explained. “Aeron’s is like a storm: wild, dangerous and possessive. Daron’s is kind of sharp and sparks like a live wire. Jin’s is lazy like the waves along the beach on a calm day and Kain’s glows like starlight.” I frowned. “His is like a tiger; dark, deadly and purring inside of me… I wonder what I feel like to them… I wonder what you and Bane will feel like… if we ever mate.”

His mouth turned upwards in a possessive smirk and his hand disappeared into his trouser pocket.

“Maybe we should find out…” The buzz of the vibrator sewn into my panties returned with a vengeance, pulsing as if punishing me for forgetting it was there before slowing to the barest tease. “Do you want to mate with me, Lilith?”

Did I? I looked into his bright green eyes and pondered it. I adored Blaze, but at the same time I was terrified of the prophecy his grandmother had told him. I didn’t think I’d survive it if he told me he loved me and then died straight after, wouldn’t the mating bond make that so much worse?

But maybe what I needed right now was to make the choice for myself and use it as something good to wipe away the terrible feeling of Enzo forcing the bond on me.

“It would be a shame to let the dress go to waste,” I whispered, blushing.

He grinned like he’d won the lottery and swooped me up in his arms, the expression making him look unexpectedly boyish for the few moments it lasted. How he got from the door of the tower to my bedroom so fast was a mystery, but it didn’t take long before I was gently deposited on the bed.

Then he paused. “Are you certain?” he asked, though it clearly killed him to do so. “You’re under a bit of duress, perhaps…” He started to move away.

I grabbed his arm, the action pressed the vibrator more firmly against my clit, making me gasp. “I’m sure,” I insisted. “I need something good to come out of tonight. And it is my birthday
.” I hated using the excuse, but I didn’t want to lose the chance to be Blaze’s mate in truth out of his misplaced concern for my wellbeing. “I want my first ever present to be our mating bond.”

“First ever present?” he asked, but I shook my head.

“Not now,” I whispered, as I held out my hand and summoned a single pyrokinetic flame into my palm. “Mate with me? Please…”

With a groan, his resolve crumbled, and he turned back to me with fire dancing around his own fingers. When he pressed his palm to mine, we willed our two flames to merge into one. I felt the pinching sensation in my chest once again before Blaze kissed me so possessively that it destroyed my ability to focus on anything else. Our mating bond exploded between us, the force of it breaking our kiss as we both sucked in air.

Blaze stiffened for a second, then relaxed. “You feel like bliss,” he told me, eyes burning a hole in mine. “You feel like falling into bed at the end of a long day, and the comfort of a lover’s arms. You’re this softness inside of me that every fibre of my being wants to get close to and protect.”
